 2022 Preview

Sweet Water completed the 2021 season with a 14-0 record. Last year Sweet Water captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 1A State Championship by defeating Wadley at the Alabama Super Seven 40-16 in Birmingham.

No team at Sweet Water ever won more games in a season than the fourteen victories last year. The last time they won as many was back in 2008. The Bulldogs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Thompson saw improvement as they won fourteen games following a 8-3 record in 2020.

The high-scoring Sweet Water offense ranked 12th in the AHSAA. They averaged 42.2 points a game.

The Bulldogs defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 6th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 8.4 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 22-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Sweet Water has gone a combined 117-38. Their 75.5% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Sweet Water has gone a combined 235-81. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 1A and 19th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Pat Thompson who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 74-24 over the past eight seasons at Sweet Water. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Thompson. Coach Thompson has won two state championships at Sweet Water, the last coming in 2021.

Coach Thompson's overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 74-24 (75.5%).

The Sweet Water Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region three during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 1A but move from region two over to region three.

The Bulldogs enter the 2022 season riding a 14 game winning streak. They have also won 13 consecutive regular season games. Sweet Water has won 6 consecutive region games. They have won 9 straight games on their home turf at Nolan Atkins Stadium.

The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region three and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 1A Super Seven come December. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2000 and this year should be no exception.

The Bulldogs open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Thomasville on Friday, August 26 at Anderson Field. Last year the Thomasville Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in third place in Class 3A region three. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Hillcrest Evergreen by a score of 27-19.

Sweet Water and Thomasville have met a total of 78 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 14-63-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2021 with Sweet Water winning by a score of 13-7.
